Interview with Martin Ellerby!

I had the awesome chance to interview Martin Ellerby and ask him some of your questions! He was a very kind and gracious man and had a lot of great things to share with you. Check out what he has to say about being a composer and his composition Paris Sketches.

If you have a decent broadband connection, you should be able to download easily. If you have dail up, you're welcome to try! We'll also listen to this in class and talk about it.

You can find the interview by clicking here.

After listening to that, it was so cool that we were able to dissect Mr. Ellerby's mind for his views on not only "Paris Sketches" but also his general thoughts on music and composing. One thing I liked was that he didn't come off as full of himself, and for the most part answered all of the questions very well. I particularly enjoy how, as he said, he writes for the whole band and strays from the "wind band" sound and tries to get it to sound like an orchestra. It really gives his work a unique sound compared to other pieces we have all played at one point in time. The nod to the percussion section was well taken too. I think that after listening to this and discussing it, we can come away with a lot of different things that will improve our overall performance of this piece. We should all thank Mr. Hilden too for lining this whole interview up. It was very cool!

I must say that I learned a lot from the interview. Especially his composing method, I found it very inspiring how he can take what he sees and hears and put it into a composition. After hearing him talk, I will look at the piece a whole new way. Thankyou to Mr. Hilden for setting that up! I think it will help us a lot.

I get why the cemetary is a happier song now. He said it was up high and you can see everything. So it's kind of like looking around the town and seeing how pretty it is. He sounds like a spiffy guy! How did you get him to do this anyway?! Did you just email him and asked?

i was baby-sitting two of my little cousins last night and we were watching fantasia. i was llistening to it and there were quite a few similarities to some of the musical ideas throughout paris sketches. is this just a coincidence? io don't know, but it was very cool.

Hayley: I emailed him and asked if he would do it. I was driving home and remembered what Jack Stamp said about composers. He said that most composers love it when bands ask for help, but most never do.

So, I did. And he said yes. I figured there was no harm in asking.
